Cortinarius (Phlegmacium) subturbinatus Henry syn. C. sulphurinus Quél s. Lange Lederbrauner Klumpfuss Cap 6–16cm across, convex to flattened-convex, margin remaining incurved for a long time, tawny-buff, often darker when old, paler at margin initially. Stem 35–100 x 7–20mm (18–45mm wide at marginate bulb), white discolouring yellowish especially from base. Flesh thick, very firm, white. Taste mild, smell fruity at first soon becoming more sour. Gills pale clay at first then ochraceous, finally rusty-buff. Spore print rust. Spores lemon- to almond-shaped, rough, 11.5–13 x 6–7.5µ. No reaction on flesh with NaOH; cap cuticle gradually dark brown. Habitat under beech on chalk. Season autumn. Occasional. Edibility suspect -avoid. Found In Europe.
